my largest hoop is 100 * 100 although I have several others. How do I split some of the larger designs or does it alter them too much if I reduce their size? What is the best sizing programme to use?

To split the design into pieces, you need software. Among the home (non professional), I recommend you Embrid. This software has a low cost and clear interface. A lot of tutorials.
